MacNeil Welcomes Progress with Mobile Connectivity as 4G Becomes Available in Stornoway

Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil is pleased to receive confirmation that 4G is now available to EE customers in Stornoway.

EE's network will be supporting an emergency services network as part of a Home Office contract to modernise emergency services communications.

Commenting Angus MacNeil MP said:

“I am pleased to have received confirmation from EE that 4G went live yesterday in Stornoway. This welcome development is a result of the requirement to modernise emergency services communications.

“Getting to this stage with mobile connectivity has been ongoing for a long time. I have and will continue to liaise regularly with mobile operators and vigorously campaign for improved mobile coverage in the islands.

In November I met with representatives from EE who confirmed with me that they were looking to site in the region of 25 new masts across the constituency to provide 4G coverage along key roads that currently lack mobile coverage, together with upgrading existing sites to 4G.

“Improved mobile coverage is dependent on fibre broadband and at Westminster on Tuesday during a debate on the rollout of superfast broadband, I called on the UK Government to up its game on broadband.

“I appreciate that this is early days and that there may be teething problems, but this is a step in right direction and I look forward to seeing further progress throughout our islands.”
