SNP SEEKING TO FORM ISLANDS ADMINISTRATION
The SNP group in Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have declared their intention to form an administration, following their success at today’s council election, after standing on a pan-island agenda.
The SNP Group returned 7 councillors from the Butt to Barra, making them the largest group by far and with a right to form an administration and bring new governance to the Comhairle’s way of doing things. Already, a good number of independent councillors respect this mandate and are positively engaging with the SNP group.
Speaking afterwards group leader Donald Manford said,
“Firstly, I would like to say that I am back to full health after being unwell at the count and I would like to thank the sports centre staff, paramedics and hospital staff for their excellent care.
“Some of my colleagues joked that I collapsed due to the number of votes I picked up in my ward! In reality, it was probably over-work, travel and early starts.
“The serious business now is that we are looking to form an administration composed of the SNP group and independent councillors. I thank those councillors who have already engaged with us - the largest group elected by the people - and want to see a more transparent and accountable Comhairle. We will continue to reach out to councillors who share this view.
“One thing is clear, things must change. Let us seize this new opportunity.”
