Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP, Angus Brendan MacNeil, and MSP, Alasdair Allan, have warmly welcomed the announcement from the Scottish Land Fund that Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath have been awarded £100,586 to purchase the Old Carinish School and adjoining school house.

Funding has been provided for Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath to relocate their important collections from Benbecula, to make these accessible and to become an active community hub for the Gaelic Language, for learning, family history and the welcoming of visitors.

Both parliamentarians wrote in support of funding for the project.

Alasdair Allan MSP said:

"I believe this project shows tremendous vision and will contribute to a real cultural enrichment in North Uist. There is a real opportunity to have locals and visitors alike engage in, preserve and learn from the island's own tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

"My congratulations to those who have involved in this successful bid, and I look forward to visiting the refurbished school soon."

Angus Brendan MacNeil MP said:

"I am delighted to learn that Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist A Tuath has been successful in applying to the Scottish Land Fund and securing £100,586 towards the costs of purchasing the Old Carinish School and adjoining School House to use as a community heritage hub and Gaelic Language centre.

"Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist A Tuath deserve every credit in securing this funding and I wish them every success as they progress this project."
